Hall Madden Tie news:
Up your tie knowledge: there are 4 basic types of ties
From most formal to least formal
-
The strongest natural fibre and the most widely chosen material for ties and pocket squares on the market. Fairly resistant to wrinkles and featuring a nice, soft drape, silk is the perfect weight for year-round use. Our silk hails exclusively from Northern Italyโs region of Como, home to a climate renowned for its large population of silkworms thanks to an abundance of mulberry trees (thought to be the silkwormโs favourite food). Add to that a history of silk craftsmanship and production that dates back to the 15th century and youโve got yourself the best of the best in terms of Italian silk.
The woven silk tie: made of sleek and soft Como silk, for an elegant, polished look. Available in a wide variety of colors, prints and woven textures.
The knit silk tie: made of sleek and soft Como silk, for a luxurious feel and characteristic look. Excellent in all four seasons.
The woven silk pocket square: made of sleek and soft Como silk, for an elegant, polished look. Available in a wide variety of colours, prints and woven textures.
-
The number-one material for suits, jackets and trousers also makes for sophisticated ties and pocket squares. Usually matte and naturally wrinkle-resistant, wool accessories are generally more formal than those made of cotton and less formal than those made of silk. An excellent middle ground for business or other semi-formal affairs.
The woven wool tie: made of fine wool, for a crisp and formal look. Options include flannels, prints, textural weaves and super soft wool.
The knit wool tie: made of thicker wool, for a warm feel and characteristic look. Best suited to fall and winter.
The woven wool pocket square: crafted with super soft and lightweight wool, often with a decorative print.
-
Known for its natural, earthy look and excellent durability, linen is a product of the flax plant (whose technical name is โLinum Usitatissimumโ, hence the name of the fabric). While 100% linen is highly prone to wrinkles โ which, as we all know, can be extremely charming in the right context (usually summer and informal) โ linen blends may avoid the wrinkles entirely while still maintaining some of the fibreโs iconic style.
The woven linen tie: mostly available in the Spring & Summer collection.
The knit linen tie: not applicable.
The woven linen pocket square: while considerably different than their supple silk counterparts, our linen pocket squares are still extremely lightweight and unusually soft. Full of body and perfect for less formal occasions. Options include hand stitched thread in one of many contrasting colours.
-
Lightweight and relatively susceptible to wrinkles (hence the reason we only offer it for ties in the form of a blend), cotton is a strong natural fibre that offers excellent breathability and is easy to clean.
The woven cotton-blend tie: for a slightly more casual look, featuring a full body and slightly stiff drape.
The knit cotton tie: not applicable.
The woven cotton pocket square: available in a wide variety of colors and prints, including both seasonal and four-season qualities.
Ties can be either a woven or a knit
Wovens (more formal)
Weaves are textiles created by perpendicular, interlacing yarns. Generally speaking, the finer the yarn, the more formal the resulting fabric. Offering a crisper feel and fuller drape, weaves tend to be sturdier and more formal than knits. The following weaves are available for our ties and/or pocket squares.
Knits (less formal)
Unlike the criss-crossing yarns of a weave, knits consist of consecutive loops, making them much more flexible, springy and casual than woven textiles. When it comes to knit ties, a number of elements tend to be consistent: a loose texture, the absence of an interlining and square ends. Available in silk for year-round enjoyment or in wool for a slightly heavier, more textured look thatโs well suited to fall and winter. Knit ties can be used to dress a look up or down, depending on the elements at play
Types of Woven Ties
-
Twill
Available in a wide range of colors, the twill weave is one of the most versatile around. Used for many different textiles and characterized by its parallel diagonal rib structure, the texture is subtle enough for both fancy occasions and everyday use, whether as a tie, bow tie orpocket square.
-
Grenadine
Yes - itโs a woven tie even though appears as a knit (one of our most popular weaves). Although originally used to make black lace in the 18th century, the grenadine weave is now most often reserved for the outer shell of a tie. Reminiscent of gauze, its open, mesh-like quality ensures an interesting texture, even in the case of solid colors. Also available for bow ties and pocket squares.
-
Jacquard
Instead of printing patterns directly onto the surface, jacquard fabrics feature an intricate pattern woven into the warp on a special mechanical loom. The resulting fabrics look and feel rich and are available in a variety of compositions such as wool, silk and linen, or a combination of these
-
Satin (bow tie only)
The satin weaveโs pattern of interlacing yarns results in a smooth, glossy front and a matte back. Thanks to its inherent shine, colors made in a satin weave tend to look even brighter. Instantly elevating your entire ensemble, satin makes for an eye-catching bow tie. Intended for occasional use. Only available in our bow tie make and not available for ties or pocket squares.
-
Ottoman (bow tie only)
Strong, softly draped and wrinkle resistant, our Ottoman fabrics are characterized by horizontal ribbed weft yarns and compared to faille and bengaline, the ribs of Ottoman fabrics are larger and rounder. The plain weave fabric involves thicker and grouped weft yarns with numerous finer warp yarns that totally cover the weft. Ottoman can be made from different fibers, but for our tie collection we only offer it in a luxurious silk.
-
Velvet
Our velvet fabrics are characterized by the short fibre pile on the face of the fabrics. This pile brings a soft and warm touch to the surface of the fabric, and gives the resulting bow-tie its characteristic look. Our cotton velvet options are very suitable for black-tie events and come in a variety of fancy colors.
